Mechanistic Insights and Engineering Pathways of Enhanced Rock Weathering for Carbon Neutrality in Mountainous Mine Ecological Restoration

Synopsis: Integrating ERW into the restoration of abandoned mountainous mines could simultaneously support ecosystem recovery and atmospheric CO₂ removal. The proposed framework combines physical restoration, acid–base neutralization, soil development and biological interactions, using waste rock as a reactive substrate. By improving soil conditions, supplying minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium, and promoting mineral carbonation, ERW could reduce restoration-related emissions while increasing carbon sequestration. The study provides a conceptual basis for future field testing and low-carbon mine rehabilitation.
Multi-century cooling after net-zero greenhouse gas emissions

Synopsis: New analysis suggests that achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions could lead to substantial long-term cooling rather than simply stabilizing global temperatures. The researchers distinguish the traditional zero emissions commitment (ZEC), associated with stopping CO₂ emissions, from a policy-relevant net-zero emissions commitment (Net-ZEC), which accounts for multiple greenhouse gases and carbon removal. While historical CO₂ emissions imply little multi-century temperature change after cessation, modelling indicates that net-zero GHG scenarios could produce at least 0.6°C of cooling over subsequent centuries.
ForestERW: A Spatially Explicit Carbon Dioxide Removal Model for Practical Enhanced Rock Weathering Applications in United States Forests

Synopsis: This process-based modelling study provides the first detailed assessment of ERW as a carbon dioxide removal strategy across U.S. forests. Simulating a 40-tonne-per-hectare basalt application across 132 million hectares of manageable forest, researchers estimate a gross removal potential of 660 Mt CO₂e from one application. After accounting for supply-chain emissions, the net potential falls to 353 Mt CO₂e, equivalent to 35.3 Mt CO₂e annually over 10 years. The analysis also identifies potential forest-growth benefits from replenishing depleted nutrients.
Ambient concrete carbonation is a trivial contributor in mitigating carbon dioxide emissions from cement production

Synopsis: Global analysis finds that ambient carbonation of concrete is unlikely to offset a significant share of emissions from cement production. Using thermodynamic and diffusion-based modelling within a Monte Carlo framework, the study estimates that concrete in service could absorb around 0.23 gigatonnes of CO₂ annually by 2030 under ambient conditions. This represents less than 10% of annual cement clinker emissions, indicating that natural carbonation provides only limited climate benefits. The findings reinforce the need for rapid industrial decarbonization and more effective carbon dioxide removal and mitigation strategies.
Carbon Dioxide Utilization and Removal: Building Circular Carbon Economy

Evaluating 10 technologies across nine regions, the study identifies economic barriers and a $1.92 billion financing gap but finds strong potential for CDR due to its permanence and carbon-removal performance. A 70:30 CDR–CCU portfolio is proposed, alongside phased investment, regulatory coordination and workforce reskilling to support an equitable transition.
Indirect electrification enables the 2°C goal without reliance on carbon dioxide removal

Synopsis: Energy-system modelling indicates that the Paris Agreement’s 2°C goal could potentially be achieved without relying on large-scale CDR, but only through extensive indirect electrification. The analysis finds that rapidly expanding renewable generation and electrolyzers, alongside widespread hydrogen use and electrification, would be technically demanding. Limiting CDR would also raise total mitigation costs by about 20% over the twenty-first century. The findings suggest that CDR may not be indispensable if indirect electrification can be scaled across the energy system.
Managing climate overshoot: a risk-based strategy for climate stabilisation

They suggest combining rapid decarbonisation and expanded carbon removal with carefully governed cooling interventions to address near-term warming, while emphasizing that intervention risks must be assessed alongside the growing consequences of delay.
Exploring CO2 Adsorption by Tuning the Pore Size in Polyamine-Impregnated Mesoporous Silica for Direct Air Capture

Synopsis: This research shows that tuning pore size can improve the performance of amine-based materials for DAC. Researchers tested two polyamines, TETA and TREN, at different loadings in SBA-15 supports with varying mesopore sizes. Higher amine loading generally increased CO₂ uptake, but efficiency and adsorption kinetics depended on both pore structure and amine type. Larger pores improved accessibility and kinetics at intermediate loading, while excessive loading caused crowding and transport limitations, particularly for branched TREN. The findings highlight pore-size optimization as a practical route to designing more effective DAC sorbents.
Biochar and carbon variations across diverse industrial crops and cultivated wild plant species: implications for flexible biomass supply chains and Biochar Carbon Removals - Preprint

Synopsis: Biochar research finds that diverse biomass feedstocks can produce broadly comparable carbon-stability characteristics while retaining important differences in their functional properties. Nine industrial and cultivated wild plant species were processed through standardized slow pyrolysis at 550°C. Although biochar yields and H/C ratios varied only modestly, carbon content, ash levels, fixed carbon and surface area differed substantially. Trace-element concentrations were generally low relative to selected European regulatory limits. The findings support diversified biomass systems for scalable biochar-based carbon removal, while highlighting the need for mixture and scale-up studies.
Bismuth-Driven Flow-Through pH Swing Architecture for Membrane-Free Electrochemical Marine Carbon Removal

Synopsis: A new electrochemical approach could improve the scalability of marine carbon dioxide removal by using a membrane-free pH-swing system based on bismuth electrodes. Researchers developed a flow-through cell with porous electrodes that increases reaction rates while maintaining efficient material use. The system achieved a tenfold increase in current density compared with previous work, reaching 20 mA/cm² at 0.7 V, and successfully extracted CO₂ from simulated and real seawater. Technoeconomic analysis indicates a potential 14% reduction in projected system costs.
Net-negative emission methanol from direct air capture and water electrolysis: A comprehensive analysis of multiple energy pathways

Synopsis: This techno-economic study compares three energy configurations for producing methanol from atmospheric CO₂ by integrating DAC, alkaline water electrolysis and CO₂ hydrogenation. The analysis finds that an Allam-cycle configuration produces the most methanol, while high-temperature gas-cooled reactors eliminate fossil fuels and achieve the lowest cradle-to-gate emissions at −1.52 tCO₂/t-MeOH. However, this option has the highest energy consumption and costs. Across scenarios, methanol costs range from $590 to $1,413 per tonne, highlighting trade-offs between emissions, energy use and economics.
Thermodynamic assessment of a novel liquid direct air capture system integrated with natural gas reforming for synergistic methanol production

Synopsis: Integrating DAC with steam methane reforming (SMR) and methanol production can substantially increase carbon availability and methanol output, but creates new hydrogen and economic constraints. Four configurations were assessed using thermodynamic and techno-economic modelling, with DAC integration increasing methanol-related carbon throughput by 34.6–44.1%. However, rising CO₂ incorporation shifted the systems from hydrogen-surplus to hydrogen-deficient operation, requiring significant external hydrogen. The conventional SMR–methanol system remained the most profitable, showing that DAC integration must balance carbon capture, hydrogen supply, heat integration and costs.
bioDYM: Dynamic material flow analysis for biogenic carbon management and CDR strategy assessment

Synopsis: A new open-source tool, bioDYM, is introduced to help researchers model complex carbon flows, stocks and processes over time for carbon management and CDR. Built on the ODYM framework, the software combines low-code modelling, custom carbon-transformation processes, Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis and scenario comparisons through an interactive dashboard. A German wheat-straw case study projects 8,817 Gg of carbon removed from the atmosphere by 2125, with long-term performance strongly influenced by carbon stability and product lifetimes.
Limited remineralization of Arctic permafrost-derived organic carbon in nearshore marine sediments

Synopsis: Evidence from Arctic coastal sediments suggests that most ancient permafrost carbon eroded into the ocean remains buried rather than rapidly returning to the active carbon cycle. Studying sediments near Qikiqtaruk, Canada, researchers used dual carbon isotopes to trace the fate of permafrost-derived organic carbon and found that less than 10% of redeposited Pleistocene carbon was respired. The findings indicate that marine sediment burial may limit the immediate atmospheric impact of thawing permafrost, although highly reactive carbon fractions could degrade before or after deposition.
Humid-air competitive adsorption invalidates conventional sorbent screening criteria for direct air capture

Synopsis: A large-scale computational screening study finds that nonlinear competitive adsorption of CO₂ and water can fundamentally change which metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) appear most promising for low-energy DAC. Screening 7,906 MOF structures showed that all 50 top-performing sorbents were identified only when nonlinear adsorption was modelled, with regeneration energies of 92–150 kJ/mol CO₂. CO₂ working capacity was the strongest predictor of regeneration energy, while conventional heat-of-adsorption thresholds and DFT interaction energies were less reliable, highlighting the need for process-relevant screening methods.
A systematic review on carbon sequestration and energy storage potential in 3D-printed low-carbon composites

Bamboo for soil conservation and carbon sequestration: a dual approach to climate mitigation

This review finds that bamboo’s dense root systems can stabilize soils, reduce erosion and improve soil health, while its rapid biomass growth enables carbon storage in above-ground and below-ground biomass as well as soil organic carbon. Evidence across tropical, temperate and Himalayan ecosystems supports its environmental benefits. The authors call for sustainable cultivation, species optimization and region-specific planting strategies to maximize bamboo’s potential for soil conservation and climate mitigation.
Synergistic integration of direct air capture in bioenergy systems

Synopsis: Integrating biomass gasification with DAC could enable simultaneous carbon removal, waste valorization and energy supply for capture operations. Using Aspen Plus modelling, the study evaluates a BG-H₂P-DAC system that converts biomass waste into hydrogen while generating electricity and heat for DAC. Increasing monoethanolamine concentration from 10% to 40% reduced CO₂ capture efficiency. The integrated system achieved net electricity consumption of just 0.0293 MWh/t CO₂, with generated power fully offsetting DAC electricity needs, while thermal regeneration demand was 1.32 MWh/t CO₂.

“In this episode of The CDR Policy Scoop, Sebastian Manhart and Eve Tamme are joined by Mel Murphy, an independent geochemistry consultant, and Dirk Paessler, founder and CEO of Carbon Drawdown Initiative and Vice President of the Negative Emissions Platform, for a very special episode on how anyone actually knows enhanced rock weathering is working.
Mel explains the two dominant measurement approaches, solid phase and aqueous pore water, and why they often tell different stories about the same field. Dirk brings the view from Carbon Drawdown Initiative’s own experiments: a field trial with no measurable signal, buried buckets that still show nothing after 1400 days, and a greenhouse programme now running hundreds of soil and rock combinations. The pattern that keeps surfacing is that results depend on the specific rock, soil, and method used.
That uncertainty has not stopped the market. Over 20,000 credits have been certified across Brazil, the US, and India, even as Vera has declined to build a methodology, citing immature science. Mel unpacks Carbon Plan’s critique of credits from the US company Lithos, where an implied dissolution rate came out roughly ten times higher than a new peer reviewed estimate, and how registries like Isometric are adjusting requirements accordingly.
The conversation closes on cost. Measurement now eats up 56 percent of enhanced rock weathering’s budget, the highest share of any removal method. Dirk and Mel discuss whether machine learning trained on greenhouse data and satellite based field mapping can bring that down, and why neither will commit to a timeline for readiness under something like the EU ETS.”
