JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Carbon Dioxide Removal Research Scientist at (carbon)plan
"A core part of our mission is to create public resources on climate solutions based on the best available science and data. As developments in carbon dioxide removal (CDR) accelerate, we want to grow our capacity to share relevant research, tools, and insights around emerging CDR approaches. We’re particularly interested in “open system” approaches like ocean alkalinity enhancement and enhanced weathering that require expertise in geochemistry to understand and model. As a CDR Research Scientist, you will be responsible for designing and implementing research projects that inform deployment and decision-making around CDR technologies, with a focus on “open system” approaches. Your work will support several CDR initiatives, both within our team and with external collaborators. You will report to the CDR Program Manager, and participate in a collaborative working culture in which you will contribute to setting strategy and priorities."
Sr. Process Engineer (Hydro) at Brimstone | Oakland, CA
"The Brimstone Process™ is a breakthrough in cement production, making carbon-negative portland cement with carbon-free calcium silicate rock instead of limestone."
Open positions at Noya:
"Noya’s carbon removal solution pulls excess CO2 from the atmosphere on timescales that meaningfully address climate change."
PODCASTS

Steve Smith on net zero pledges and CDR strategies & tech | Challenging Climate
"Dr Steve Smith is the Executive Director of CO2RE, as well as Executive Director of the Oxford Net Zero initiative, based at the University of Oxford’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment. He also previously co-led the Climate Science Team at the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. In this episode, we take a holistic deep dive into Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) and discuss his expertise on net zero pledges, the political and economic strategies for CDR, and technology readiness."
The Business of Enhanced Rock Weathering | Nori
"Puro added ERW credits in December 2022, opening the door for them to be sold into voluntary carbon marks. Microsoft is expanding its carbon removal portfolio to include ERW credits purchased from UNDO, hoping to sequester 5000 tons of CO2 over the next few decades. ERW can potentially deliver massive amounts of CDR, but requires significant investment and MRV to grow with the industry. Is all that possible? So, this episode discusses this exciting technique's business dimensions with our business panel. Welcome, Susan Su and Na’im Merchant."
PlantVillage is working to scale biochar in Africa–w/ Dr. David Hughes | Reversing Climate Change
"In today's Reversing Climate Change podcast, Dr. David Hughes, the Huck Chair in Global Food Security at Penn State University and Director of USAID Innovation Lab on Current and Emerging Threats to Crops, Founder of PlantVillage & Carbon4Good, describes how this program avoids middlemen and gets farmers paid directly for making biochar, how biochar improves soil health and provides additional income, and how the technique represents both climate adaptation, and mitigation."
Exploring the Risks and Riches of the Deep Sea Ecosystems in Climate Interventions: A Discussion with Lisa Levin | Plan Sea: Ocean Interventions to Address Climate Change
"The podcast focuses on the risks of ocean-based climate interventions and solar radiation options to deep ocean ecosystems. The guest, Lisa Levin, is a distinguished professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the lead author of a recent article in the journal Science called "Deep Sea Impacts of Climate Interventions." She explains that most ocean-based carbon removal technologies involve dumping materials and carbon into the ocean floor, which could affect the many different ecosystems of the deep sea. The deep sea is vast and full of biodiversity, which plays a critical role in regulating the planet's climate and maintaining its health. Lisa identifies the risks associated with ocean-based climate interventions, such as changing the light regime and adding particles or nutrients to the ocean, which could have negative consequences for deep-sea ecosystems."
Inside Planetary's Public Outreach | Nori
"Planetary Technologies won the Carbon Xprize Milestone award for their ocean-based CDR method last year. They plan to do a 120-day test this summer, hoping to remove 200 net tons of CO2 from the water. They have conducted public outreach and published a public code of conduct, but protesters gathered at Gwithian beach in North Cornwall. They will be transparent and diligent in their evaluations and monitoring. Joining us on this episode are two people who are working firsthand on the issues of public acceptability and community outreach that we’ve set out to explore CRN- Will Burt, Chief Ocean Scientist at Planetary and Pete Chargin, Planetary’s VP of Commercialization and Community Relations."

Enhanced Rock Weathering in the Global South | Institute for Carbon Removal Law and Policy
“Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is an emerging carbon drawdown strategy that leverages the natural weathering process of certain types of rocks, mainly basalt. These rocks are finely ground and applied to soils to drive chemical reactions which capture atmospheric carbon and convert it into stable forms. The stable carbon then flows through groundwater into the oceans, where it can be stored for thousands of years. The application of ERW has significant potential for scale, particularly on agricultural land. However, the implementation of ERW technologies has been limited largely to study environments in high-income countries. There is significant interest from climate financing organizations. However, given the current focus of ERW development in Global North geographies, in the absence of a concerted parallel effort in the Global South, it is likely that any future economic benefits accruing to farmers from ERW in the form of carbon offset payments will disproportionately benefit farmers in rich countries. The panelists for this webinar, Garrett Boudinot and Yifan Powers, presented their report, which aims to shift some of these actions and benefits to include poor smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries along with discussing further implications of ERW in the carbon removal space.”
