📝RESEARCH PAPERS
Maximizing tree carbon in croplands and grazing lands while sustaining yields
Sprenkle-Hyppolite, S., Griscom, B., Griffey, V., Munshi, E., & Chapman, M. (2024). Maximizing tree carbon in croplands and grazing lands while sustaining yields. Carbon Balance and Management, 19(1), 23.
Synopsis: This study evaluates the integration of trees into agricultural landscapes as a strategy for climate mitigation without compromising agricultural yields. Using expert elicitation, the maximum tree cover for 53 cropping and grazing system categories was estimated, resulting in the first global datasets on CO2 removal potential. The findings indicate that croplands can remove up to 1.86 PgCO2 yr−1, while grazing lands can contribute an additional 1.45 PgCO2 yr−1, with tropical/subtropical biomes driving the highest potential. Overall, increasing tree cover across 2.6 billion hectares of agricultural land could sequester up to 3.3 billion tons of CO2 annually, exceeding emissions from cars. This approach presents a cost-effective solution for climate mitigation, emphasizing the need for supportive policies and incentives to facilitate widespread adoption.
An assessment of ocean alkalinity enhancement using aqueous hydroxides: kinetics, efficiency, and precipitation thresholds
Ringham, M. C., Hirtle, N., Shaw, C., Lu, X., Herndon, J., Carter, B. R., & Eisaman, M. D. (2024). An assessment of ocean alkalinity enhancement using aqueous hydroxides: kinetics, efficiency, and precipitation thresholds. Biogeosciences, 21(15), 3551-3570.
Synopsis: This study investigates OAE as a method for mCDR. By converting seawater salt into NaOH, the seawater's pH and alkalinity increase, facilitating the uptake of atmospheric CO2. Tests at aquarium and tank scales show CO2 equilibration over weeks to months, with a 0.7–0.9 mol increase in DIC per mol of added alkalinity. Mineral precipitation occurs when seawater pH exceeds 10.0, primarily resulting in Mg(OH)2, transitioning to CaCO3 over time. These findings, alongside models of alkaline plume dynamics, will inform the expected carbon dioxide removal in future OAE pilot studies, emphasizing the need for further experiments that mimic field conditions, including biological activity and ocean circulation.

Kopf, A., Bhattacharya, S., Dunger, M., Hinz, A., Kamrad, M., Kremin, I., ... & Zabel, M. (2024). Initial results of a pilot project for sub-seabed basalt storage of carbon dioxide on the Reykjanes Ridge. Carbon Capture Science & Technology, 13, 100265.
Synopsis: This AIMS3 project reveals critical findings on CO2 storage in the upper ocean crust south of Iceland. Geophysical surveys and borehole drilling confirm fluid migration in young basalts, supported by in situ heat flow and geochemical signatures. These insights will enhance future CO2 injection strategies. Additionally, mineralization experiments explore optimal conditions for CO2 types, while numerical modeling and innovative monitoring tools aim to ensure effective, sustainable carbon dioxide removal.
From gas to stone: In-situ carbon mineralisation as a permanent CO2 removal solution
Seyyedi, M., & Consoli, C. (2024). From gas to stone: In-situ carbon mineralisation as a permanent CO2 removal solution. International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control, 137, 104217.
Synopsis: This review explores in-situ carbon mineralization in mafic and ultramafic formations as a viable technology for permanent CO2 storage. Despite its potential, this method has been less studied than conventional storage in sedimentary formations. Key factors for successful implementation include water usage, CO2 injection rates, risk of leakage, injectivity, fracture characterization, and monitoring strategies. The review presents outcomes from pilot tests and discusses associated costs, highlighting a case study. Ultimately, it aims to enhance awareness of in-situ carbon mineralization, emphasizing its benefits and challenges to promote further research and adoption for CO2 emissions reduction.
Advances in carbon sequestration technology using marine microalgae
Min, Z., Wang, K., Wang, H., Fu, W., & Wu, B. (2024). Advances in carbon sequestration technology using marine microalgae. Marine Biology Research, 1-17.
Synopsis: This article examines the potential of microalgae for carbon sequestration in the ocean, highlighting its role as a crucial sink for atm CO2. Key findings emphasize that precise control of environmental factors and optimization of cultivation devices significantly enhance microalgal biomass production and CO2 fixation. LCA suggest that producing high-value compounds from microalgae can achieve negative carbon emissions. The paper also assesses the economic feasibility of microalgal carbon sequestration and addresses future challenges and opportunities in this field.
Carbon and Greenhouse Gas Budgets of Europe: Trends, Interannual and Spatial Variability, and Their Drivers
Lauerwald, R., Bastos, A., McGrath, M. J., Ritter, F., Andrew, R. M., Berchet, A., ... & Li, W. (2024). Carbon and greenhouse gas budgets of Europe: trends, interannual and spatial variability, and their drivers. Authorea Preprints.
Synopsis: This study assessed Europe's GHG and carbon budget for the 2010s, estimating net GHG emissions at 3.9 Pg CO2-eq. yr−1, largely from fossil fuels. Terrestrial ecosystems acted as a net GHG sink of 0.9 Pg CO2-eq. yr−1, mainly from CO2 absorption but offset by CH4 and N2O emissions. While BU and TD estimates for CH4 and N2O align, the BU estimate for the land CO2 sink is significantly higher. GHG emissions have declined by 1.2 Pg CO2-eq. yr−1 since the 1990s, but the land CO2 sink has weakened, especially in Northern Europe due to increased forest management. High CH4 and N2O emissions are concentrated in Belgium, the Netherlands, and southern UK. The drought year of 2003 saw the highest net emissions of CO2 and total GHGs.
The centennial legacy of land-use change on organic carbon stocks of German agricultural soils
Emde, D., Poeplau, C., Don, A., Heilek, S., & Schneider, F. (2024). The centennial legacy of land‐use change on organic carbon stocks of German agricultural soils. Global Change Biology, 30(8), e17444.
Synopsis: This study examines the effects of land-use change (LUC) on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in Germany, revealing that converting natural vegetation for agriculture has led to a loss of about 5% of global terrestrial SOC. Sites converted from cropland to grassland reach SOC levels 47.3% higher than permanent cropland after approximately 83 years, while those switching from grassland to cropland drop 33.6% below permanent grassland levels after about 180 years. Over the past century, German agricultural soils gained roughly 40 million Mg C. Notably, croplands with a history of conversion from grassland are losing SOC at −0.26 Mg ha−1 year−1, while grasslands converted from cropland are gaining SOC at 0.27 Mg ha−1 year−1, indicating ongoing SOC changes due to historical LUC.
Blue carbon and the role of mangroves in carbon sequestration: Its mechanisms, estimation, human impacts and conservation strategies for economic incentives
Choudhary, B., Dhar, V., & Pawase, A. S. (2024). Blue carbon and the role of mangroves in carbon sequestration: Its mechanisms, estimation, human impacts and conservation strategies for economic incentives. Journal of Sea Research, 199, 102504.
Synopsis: This paper emphasizes the importance of mangroves, along with tidal marshes and seagrasses, as blue carbon coastal ecosystems that store significant carbon stocks and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Mangroves capture and store CO2 effectively while providing crucial ecosystem services, including coastal protection and support for fisheries. However, they face severe threats from urbanization and pollution, leading to rapid degradation. The paper discusses mangrove adaptations, carbon estimation factors, and conservation strategies to protect and restore these ecosystems, highlighting the urgent need for action to maintain their carbon sequestration potential and essential services.
Growth response of Emiliania huxleyi to ocean alkalinity enhancement
Faucher, G., Haunost, M., Paul, A. J., Tietz, A. U. C., & Riebesell, U. (2024). Growth response of Emiliania huxleyi to ocean alkalinity enhancement. EGUsphere.
Synopsis: This research examines the effects of OAE on the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi, a vital species for marine calcification. As a CDR method, OAE aims to boost ocean alkalinity for enhanced CO2 absorption. Experiments showed that E. huxleyi's growth rate decreased when total alkalinity changes exceeded ~600 µmol kg−1, indicating a threshold CO2 concentration of ~100 μatm for optimal growth. While the cellular calcite to organic carbon ratio remained stable, total carbonate formation declined. These findings underscore the need for further research on the ecological impacts of OAE before its large-scale implementation, as it progresses to field testing.
Investigating marine carbon and ecosystem feedbacks with the AWI Earth System Model
Hauck, J., Danek, C., Gürses, Ö., Karakus, O., Nagwekar, T., Oziel, L., & Seifert, M. (2024, July). Investigating marine carbon and ecosystem feedbacks with the AWI Earth System Model.
Synopsis: This study presents enhancements to the REcoM ocean biogeochemistry model in the AWI Earth System Model, focusing on the roles of zooplankton and the effects of CO2, temperature, and light on phytoplankton growth. Future projections indicate that variability in atmospheric CO2 growth rates significantly influences air-sea CO2 fluxes, revealing model deficiencies in mixed layer depth trends. Findings suggest a weakening of the biological carbon pump in the Arctic Ocean and evaluate ocean-based negative emission strategies like alkalinity enhancement, highlighting the need to integrate biological processes for more accurate carbon cycle projections.
Effect of Anthropogenic Activities on Carbon Stocks in Protected Areas within Ghana's Forest-Savannah Transition Zone
Amankwah, A. A., Quaye-Ballard, J. A., Kouassi, E. K., Porembski, S., Manu, E. A., & Adu-Bredu, S. (2024). Effect of Anthropogenic Activities on Carbon Stocks in Protected Areas within Ghana's Forest-Savannah Transition Zone. Trees, Forests and People, 100641.
Synopsis: This study assesses the impact of deforestation and degradation on carbon stocks in the Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary (BFMS) and Kogyae Strict Nature Reserve (KSNR) in Ghana. From 1992 to 2023, significant carbon losses were recorded: 40,236 Mg C in BFMS and 272,109 Mg C in KSNR, primarily due to anthropogenic activities. Closed forests had the highest carbon stocks, with soil as the main carbon pool. These findings highlight the Forest-Savannah Transition Zone's potential for climate change mitigation and emphasize the importance of nature-based solutions for carbon trading and biodiversity conservation.
Measuring Enhanced Weathering: inorganic carbon-based approaches may be required to complement cation-based approaches
Hasemer, H. D., Borevitz, J., & Buss, W. Measuring Enhanced Weathering: inorganic carbon-based approaches may be required to complement cation-based approaches. Frontiers in Climate, 6, 1352825.
Synopsis: This study examines enhanced weathering as a CO2 removal method by applying ground silicate rocks to agricultural land. It compares measurement techniques for quantifying CO2 sequestration, focusing on cations and inorganic carbon in soil and leachate. Findings show that soil retains most enhanced weathering products, with cation-based carbon dioxide removal estimates often higher than those based on inorganic carbon. The research highlights measurement challenges and recommends reconciling cation and inorganic carbon methods for more accurate CDR estimates.
Using eddy covariance observations to determine the carbon sequestration characteristics of subalpine forests in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau
Zhu, N., Wang, J., Luo, D., Wang, X., Shen, C., and Wu, N. (2024). Using eddy covariance observations to determine the carbon sequestration characteristics of subalpine forests in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, Biogeosciences, 21, 3509–3522.
Synopsis: This study investigates carbon exchange dynamics in a subalpine forest on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) over two years using the eddy covariance method. Key findings include higher CO2 exchange rates during summer and autumn, with autumn identified as the peak carbon sequestration period, reaching a maximum CO2 absorption of 10.70 µmol m−2 s−1. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was found to be the primary environmental driver of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of CO2, while increased relative humidity negatively affected carbon fixation. The subalpine forest exhibited strong annual carbon sink characteristics, with an average NEE of −332 to −351 g C m−2 from November 2020 to October 2022 and an annual CO2 absorption rate of 368 g C m−2. The study highlights the crucial role of subalpine forests in carbon cycling and their potential in mitigating climate change within the QTP.
New Perspective to Evaluate the Carbon Offsetting by Urban Blue-Green Infrastructure: Direct Carbon Sequestration and Indirect Carbon Reduction
Chen, H., Wang, L., Wang, Y., Ni, Z., Xia, B., & Qiu, R. (2024). New Perspective to Evaluate the Carbon Offsetting by Urban Blue-Green Infrastructure: Direct Carbon Sequestration and Indirect Carbon Reduction. Environmental Science & Technology.
Synopsis: This study evaluates the carbon reduction potential of urban blue-green infrastructure (BGI) in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), China. In 2019, BGI contributed a total carbon offset of 150 million tons (t·C/yr), with 35 million t·C/yr from direct sequestration and 110 million t·C/yr from indirect reduction. BGI offset 32% of total CO2 emissions (110 million t) in the GBA, highlighting the importance of considering indirect contributions to carbon reduction. These findings inform management policies aimed at enhancing urban carbon offset capabilities through the protection and restoration of BGI.
Separating CO2 emission from removal targets comes with limited cost impacts
Merfort, A., Strefler, J., Abrahão, G., Bauer, N., Luderer, G., Dorndorf, T., ... & Edenhofer, O. (2024). Separating CO2 emission from removal targets comes with limited cost impacts.
Synopsis: This study investigates the implications of separating targets for conventional emissions reductions and CDR in achieving net-zero emissions. Using the Integrated Assessment Model REMIND, the authors find that while an integrated market with a uniform carbon price provides an economically efficient contribution of CDR, it may not adequately address sustainability risks, leading to potential overuse of CDR. The analysis shows that limiting CDR can reduce the financial burden on public finance, decrease reliance on geologic CO2 storage, and result in lower cumulative emissions. However, this increased ambition incurs higher total mitigation costs, indicating a trade-off between efficiency and sustainability in net-zero pathways.
Long-term sediment organic carbon remineralization in different seagrass and macroalgae habitats: implication for blue carbon storage
Yamuza-Magdaleno, A., Jiménez-Ramos, R., Casal-Porras, I., Brun, F. G., & Egea, L. G. (2024). Long-term sediment organic carbon remineralization in different seagrass and macroalgae habitats: implication for blue carbon storage. Frontiers in Marine Science, 11, 1370768.
Synopsis: This study examines the long-term remineralization of sediment organic carbon (OC) in coastal habitats—specifically seagrasses (Zostera noltei and Cymodocea nodosa), macroalgae (Caulerpa prolifera), and unvegetated sediment—after disturbance. The results show that sediment OC from Z. noltei and unvegetated areas was fully remineralized to CO2 within one year, while 42% and 46% of OC remained in C. nodosa and C. prolifera sediments, respectively. POC remineralization released significant amounts of both labile and recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon (DOC) with low photo-reactivity. The findings highlight the need to consider smaller macrophyte species in management and restoration efforts due to their rapid remineralization potential after disturbance.

New organization to measure whether companies’ carbon removal plans actually work | Marketplace
"Carbon removal is exactly what it sounds like: taking planet-warming carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and storing it away in plants, or soil or the ocean. It might sound cool, but right now there isn’t a great way to prove that a company’s ambitious carbon removal plans will actually work.
This is where the Carbon Removal Standards Initiative comes in. It’s a new nonprofit that just launched in the U.S. this week.
The environmental argument for carbon removal is straightforward: fewer greenhouse gasses in the air means the planet warms less.
The economic argument is … well … “there’s really no natural market for it,” said Anu Khan, the founder and executive director of the Carbon Removal Standards Initiative. “We do it because it has a benefit to the climate and to the public.”
Khan expects that the removal industry will need carrots — think low-carbon incentives — and sticks — like pollution penalties — to get rolling."
Barclay Rogers of Graphyte on Durable Carbon Removal, Climate Science, and Biomass Solutions | Consensus in Conversation
"The world currently removes less than .0001% of the carbon required to meet the IPCC’s 2050 goal – so there’s A LOT of work to be done – which is what makes Graphyte’s ready-to-go solution all the more valuable.
Barclay Rogers, a former environmental lawyer, mechanical engineer, and multi-time founder, is bringing his unique set of experiences and leadership skills to making scalable, affordable CO2 removal an immediate reality with his new startup, Graphyte.
Rather than rely on energy-intensive and still-developing technology like Direct Air Capture, Barclay and his team realized that they could use nature’s own hyper-efficient carbon capture process – photosynthesis – to leverage natural resources in their revolutionary Carbon Casting process, a first-of-its-kind technique that traps carbon in easy to store bricks forged from the biomass waste generated by farms, logging camps, and paper mills.
With their world-leading carbon removal operations already underway at their Pine Bluff, Arkansas facility, Graphyte is able to offer durable carbon removal that's scalable, affordable, and, maybe most importantly, ready right now."

SB 308: Unpacking California's Latest Carbon Removal Bill | Institute for Responsible Carbon Removal
California has adopted a suite of world-leading emissions reductions policies and programs. However, its recent net-zero mandate highlighted a clear role for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) to provide up to 15% of the total mitigation needed to achieve this goal. SB 308 (Becker) is a bill currently moving through the state Legislature that would establish the regulatory framework and foundation to achieve this CDR target. Its key provisions would require separate mandates for carbon emissions reductions and carbon dioxide removal and to “ensure the state achieves carbon dioxide removals equivalent to at least 100% of statewide greenhouse gas emissions in calendar year 2045, and all subsequent years, in order to achieve the net zero and net negative greenhouse gas emissions goals.
Sam and the show’s host, Wil Burns, will engage in a conversation to unpack the key elements of the proposed law and discuss how it could drive CDR deployment in both California and nationally."
