RESEARCH PAPERS
Nuclear Explosions for Large Scale Carbon Sequestration-Preprint
Haverly, A. (2025). Nuclear Explosions for Large Scale Carbon Sequestration. arXiv preprint arXiv:2501.06623.
Synopsis: Confronting the escalating threat of climate change requires innovative and large-scale interventions. This paper presents a bold proposal to employ a buried nuclear explosion with a yield of 81 gigatonnes in a remote basaltic seabed for pulverizing basalt, thereby accelerating carbon sequestration through Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW). The explosion would remove CO₂ emissions equivalent to 30 years' worth of global emissions and could be executed at a cost of approximately 10 billion dollars.
Assessment of technologies and economics for carbon dioxide removal from a portfolio perspective
Mühlbauer, A., Keiner, D., Gerhards, C., Caldera, U., Sterner, M., & Breyer, C. (2025). Assessment of technologies and economics for carbon dioxide removal from a portfolio perspective. International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control, 141, 104297.
Synopsis: This study emphasizes the need for diverse carbon dioxide removal portfolios to meet climate goals and introduces the LUT-CDR tool for assessing CDR strategies based on societal preferences. Six scenarios evaluate deployment limits, costs, land use, readiness, and storage security. Results show large-scale CDR could remove 500–1750 GtCO₂ by 2100, requiring minimal GDP investment. Secure sequestration methods like direct air capture outperform bioenergy and afforestation, highlighting key trade-offs and future research needs.
Prey dynamics as a buffer: Enhancing copepod resilience to Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement
Bhaumik, A., Faucher, G., Henning, M., Meunier, C. L., & Boersma, M. (2025). Prey dynamics as a buffer: Enhancing copepod resilience to Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement. Environmental Research Letters.
Synopsis: Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement boosts ocean carbon storage by adding alkaline substances, altering seawater chemistry. This study examined OAE’s direct effects on the copepod Temora longicornis and indirect effects via its prey, Rhodomonas salina. While OAE reduced prey growth, it improved nutritional quality, mitigating direct negative impacts on the copepod. These findings enhance understanding of how OAE influences zooplankton communities and broader marine ecosystems.
Review and syntheses: Ocean alkalinity enhancement and carbon dioxide removal through marine enhanced rock weathering using olivine
Geerts, L. J., Hylén, A., & Meysman, F. J. (2025). Review and syntheses: Ocean alkalinity enhancement and carbon dioxide removal through marine enhanced rock weathering using olivine. Biogeosciences, 22(2), 355-384.
Synopsis: This study highlights key uncertainties in marine enhanced rock weathering (mERW) as a carbon dioxide removal method. While lab research suggests olivine can enhance ocean alkalinity and CO2 sequestration, field data are lacking. Factors like sediment type, pore-water saturation, and pH impact dissolution rates, complicating effectiveness assessments. Reliable monitoring is needed, and large-scale pilot studies are essential to evaluate mERW’s feasibility, scalability, and long-term impact.
How long does carbon stay in a near-pristine central Amazon forest? An empirical estimate with radiocarbon
Chanca, I., Levin, I., Trumbore, S., Macario, K., Lavric, J., Quesada, C. A., ... & Sierra, C. A. (2025). How long does carbon stay in a near-pristine central Amazon forest? An empirical estimate with radiocarbon. Biogeosciences, 22(2), 455-472.
Synopsis: The Amazon forest plays a crucial role in the global carbon cycle by assimilating CO₂ and storing C in biomass and soil. This study estimated the mean transit time of C—the time between its entry and exit from the ecosystem—by analyzing radiocarbon signatures in ecosystem respiration (ER) at the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory. Measurements from 2019 and 2021 suggest transit times of 6±2 and 18±4 years, respectively, highlighting variability in C cycling. These findings refine our understanding of Amazonian C storage and turnover dynamics.
Carbon removal efficiency and energy requirement of engineered carbon removal technologies
Sanchez, D. L., Psarras, P., Murnen, H., & Rogers, B. (2025). Carbon removal efficiency and energy requirement of engineered carbon removal technologies. RSC Sustainability.
Synopsis: To ensure carbon negativity, carbon dioxide removal methods must account for lifecycle emissions and energy use. This study conducts a harmonized assessment of twelve engineered CDR technologies, comparing carbon removal efficiency and energy demands. Biomass-based approaches generally outperform direct air capture and enhanced rock weathering due to lower energy requirements, though variability exists. While ERW and biomass-based methods are less energy-intensive than DAC, efficiency depends on energy sources and carbon losses, informing optimal resource allocation for CDR.
Components of the CO2 Exchange in a Southeastern USA Salt Marsh
Morris, J. T., & Whiting, G. J. (2024). Components of the CO2 Exchange in a Southeastern USA Salt Marsh. Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Research, 3, 0077.
Synopsis: This study monitored CO₂ exchange in short- and tall-form Spartina alterniflora in a southeastern USA salt marsh. Tall grasses near creeks reached higher biomass but had similar photosynthetic rates as short grasses in the interior marsh. Tall canopies exhibited higher net production, growth, and respiration but lower sediment respiration. Belowground production, crucial for carbon sequestration and marsh elevation gain, was estimated at 927 and 193 g C m²/year, supporting surface elevation increases of 0.2 and 0.04 cm/year, respectively.
Early Career Recommendations for the Equitable Growth of a Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Sector
Kitch, G. D., Duke, P. J., Grabb, K. C., Simancas‐Giraldo, S., Adekunbi, F. O., Addey, C. I., ... & Wright‐Fairbanks, E. K. (2025). Early career recommendations for the equitable growth of a marine carbon dioxide removal sector. Perspectives of Earth and Space Scientists, 6(1), e2024CN000246.
Synopsis: To achieve global climate goals, carbon removal is essential alongside emission reductions. Marine carbon dioxide removal offers scalability and durability in addressing legacy emissions, but challenges remain, including growing the industry, aligning projects with equity goals, and developing trusted carbon credits. A group of early career ocean professionals (ECOPs) highlights these issues and recommends investments in innovation, monitoring, and training to expand early career capacity and ensure global equity in marine CDR. ECOPs can lead the field if supported and empowered.
National climate strategies show inequalities in global development of carbon dioxide geological storage
Alcalde, J., Johnson, G., & Roberts, J. J. (2025). National climate strategies show inequalities in global development of carbon dioxide geological storage. Communications Earth & Environment, 6(1), 61.
Synopsis: Carbon dioxide geological storage is vital for limiting global warming to below 1.5°C by mitigating emissions and enabling permanent carbon removal. This study examines CGS in national emission reduction strategies under the Paris Agreement. A third of countries plan to use CGS for emissions mitigation, while another third aim to combine mitigation and carbon removals, with no countries focusing solely on removals. High-income countries with significant oil and gas production show the strongest commitment to CGS, raising concerns about equity and the need for careful policy design.
Evaluating ocean alkalinity enhancement as a carbon dioxide removal strategy in the North Sea
Liu, F., Daewel, U., Kossack, J., Demir, K. T., Thomas, H., & Schrum, C. (2025). Evaluating ocean alkalinity enhancement as a carbon dioxide removal strategy in the North Sea. EGUsphere, 2025, 1-34.
Synopsis: Using a regional model, researchers study OAE in the North Sea, focusing on CO2 uptake, carbon storage, and changes in carbonate chemistry. Results show that coastal regions, especially the Norwegian Trench and Skagerrak, enhance CO2 uptake more efficiently than offshore areas. Long-term carbon storage is similar across regions, with minor pH changes offshore. The model’s resolution limits precise chemical predictions, highlighting the need for finer-scale models to assess local impacts.

It emphasizes that while MRV could be costly with current technology, reducing costs and ensuring transparency are crucial for stimulating investment and maximizing societal benefits.
Wildfires offset the increasing but spatially heterogeneous Arctic–boreal CO2 uptake
Halloran, P. R., Bell, T. G., Burt, W., Chu, S., Gill, S., Henderson, C., ... & Watson, A. Seawater carbonate chemistry based Carbon Dioxide Removal: towards commonly agreed principles for carbon Monitoring, Reporting and Verification. Frontiers in Climate, 7, 1487138.
Synopsis: The Arctic–Boreal Zone is warming rapidly, affecting its significant soil carbon stocks. This study, using CO₂ flux data, geospatial datasets, and random forest models, reveals that while the region was an overall CO₂ sink from 2001 to 2020 (−548 ± 140 Tg C yr−1), over 30% of the area acted as a CO₂ source. Tundra regions may already be shifting to CO₂ sources. When fire emissions are included, the region’s sink becomes insignificant, and the permafrost zone is CO₂ neutral, highlighting the critical role of fires in regional carbon dynamics.

Oberlander, J. L., Burke, M. E., London, C. A., & MacIntyre, H. L. (2025). Assessing the impacts of simulated ocean alkalinity enhancement on viability and growth of nearshore species of phytoplankton. Biogeosciences, 22(2), 499-512.
Synopsis: This study examined the impact of OAE on phytoplankton growth, specifically Thalassiosira pseudonana and Diacronema lutheri, through short-term and long-term pH alterations. Short-term exposure had no significant impact, but long-term exposure reduced growth rates. Results show variability in species' responses to elevated pH, suggesting that many species may not be affected by OAE.
Carbon dioxide removal dilemma of macroalgae products: Evidence from carbon footprint and profitability
Jiao, T., Feng, E. Y., Li, Y., & Tian, Y. (2025). Carbon Dioxide Removal Dilemma of Macroalgae Products: Evidence from Carbon Footprint and Profitability. Journal of Cleaner Production, 144870.
Synopsis: Macroalgae can sequester atmospheric CO2 in their biomass, making them a proposed carbon removal strategy. Through a "cradle-to-grave" life cycle assessment, this study finds that carbon sequestration is only achievable with specific macroalgae products when properly stored. Product processing and usage contribute the most carbon emissions, and the CO2 absorbed during growth only partially offsets these emissions. Sensitivity tests show that using clean energy and improving efficiency could help achieve net-zero emissions for products like biochar. However, current carbon pricing makes macroalgae-based carbon sequestration economically unviable.
Optimizing biochar for carbon sequestration: a synergistic approach using machine learning and natural language processing
Li, J., Chen, Y., Wang, C., Chen, H., Gao, Y., Meng, J., ... & Wang, H. (2025). Optimizing biochar for carbon sequestration: a synergistic approach using machine learning and natural language processing. Biochar, 7(1), 20.
Synopsis: Biochar is a promising technology for carbon storage and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, but optimizing it is challenging due to the complexity of natural systems. Machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP) offer solutions through enhanced data analysis and pattern recognition, ushering in a new era of biochar research.

PODCASTS
Coproduction & Additionality: How Do We Draw the Line for Carbon Removal?—w/ Grant Faber, Carbon-Based Commentary | Reversing Climate Change
"Additionality is typically considered a major marker of quality in carbon removal. But what do we do when carbon removal suppliers are producing other types of products and services that make them less dependent upon voluntary carbon market revenue?
Perhaps even more importantly, how do we have a productive disagreement on this topic? Bringing up some concerns can open one to criticism. But we also depend upon people thinking differently in order to advance our understanding of the world and the types of value we create. How do we make sure we aren't encouraging crackpot analysis while also not hewing so closely to orthodoxy that we might be missing important insights? How can we set the stage to understand the true landscape of disagreement so that we can come to better decisions and not be driven by ideology in improper ways?
Today's podcast features Reversing Climate Change alumnus, Grant Faber, returning to the show. Grant is sui generis in our sector for his deep involvement in life-cycle and techno-economic assessment. He is the Direct Air Capture Hubs Program Manager at the U.S. Department of Energy. Prior to DOE, he ran a consultancy focused on life cycle and techno-economic assessment where he worked with many different startups, accelerators, and investors working on carbon removal and carbon conversion. Before that, he worked with Twelve, Heirloom, and the Global CO2 Initiative."

Google Breaks Biochar Records as Industry Faces Challenges | Biochar Today
"This week's biochar highlights include a stormwater filter, biochar-based fertilizers, and Google's investment in carbon removal, while addressing challenges in awareness and market development.
A new stormwater filter media from Metzler Biochar called Char21 SW™ blends biochar with other materials like switchgrass and calcium silica sand to effectively remove pollutants from stormwater. This blend is designed to work in different conditions, is cost-effective, and can be used in various applications. Additionally, biochar-based controlled-release fertilizers (BCRFs) are emerging as a sustainable farming solution. BCRFs improve nutrient retention, boost crop yields, and promote carbon sequestration, offering a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fertilizers.
Google is also investing in biochar, purchasing carbon dioxide removal credits from Varaha, which produces biochar from an invasive plant species. This highlights biochar’s potential as a carbon removal solution. Despite these benefits, challenges remain in the biochar industry, including a lack of public awareness, inconsistent quality standards, and the need for market development and investment. Overcoming these barriers is crucial for unlocking biochar's full potential."

Is Biochar ACTUALLY good for Carbon Removal? | Biochar Today
"In this episode of This Week in Biochar, we delve into a critical discussion about biochar's role in carbon removal, challenging the common misclassification of biochar as a carbon dioxide removal (CDR) method. Dr. Romain Pirard argues that biochar primarily prevents emissions through carbon stabilization, acting as delayed emissions rather than true removal.
Next, we highlight a study demonstrating the benefits of using biochar in agriculture, where a six-year vineyard trial showed that combining biochar and compost increased yields by over 30% and generated $17,607 more revenue per acre. This increase was achieved without sacrificing grape quality.
Finally, we look at the upcoming International Biomass Conference & Expo, a major industry event featuring discussions on biochar technology, markets, funding opportunities and free admission for biochar producers. Don't miss this deep dive into the reality and potential of biochar!"
