Synopsis: This study presents a dual-bed direct air carbon capture and utilization flow reactor that converts atmospheric CO₂ into syngas (CO + H₂) using sunlight, without the need for high temperatures or pressures. The reactor captures CO₂ via a silica-amine adsorbent, then releases and converts it to syngas with a silica/alumina-titania-cobalt photocatalyst under concentrated light. The system operates diurnally, capturing CO₂ at night and converting it to syngas during the day, using the oxidation of depolymerized plastics as the counter-reaction.

Synopsis: This study evaluates calcite and dunite for enhanced benthic weathering in the Baltic Sea as a marine carbon dioxide removal strategy. Laboratory experiments and modeling show that calcite achieves up to 10 times higher CO₂ uptake efficiency than dunite, making it the preferred material. Sequestration costs range from €82–462 per tonne for calcite, compared to €558–1920 for dunite. These findings may inform similar coastal carbon removal efforts globally in geochemically comparable regions.

Synopsis: Six of nine planetary boundaries are currently exceeded, with land use changes contributing significantly. This study models the potential for BECCS using Miscanthus plantations while considering constraints from planetary boundaries like nitrogen flows, freshwater change, land system change, and biosphere integrity. The results show that BECCS potential under these constraints is minimal (0.1 gigatons CO₂ per year), with biosphere integrity being the most impactful factor. The study emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to balancing climate mitigation and ecosystem preservation.

Synopsis: Ocean alkalinity enhancement shifts seawater carbonate equilibrium to sequester CO₂. However, it may affect calcifying organisms, like coccolithophores, by promoting increased calcification, potentially reducing alkalinity enhancement efficiency. Using satellite data, this study shows that the ratio of inorganic to organic carbon in coccolithophores is influenced by factors like nutrient stoichiometry and carbonate chemistry. Extreme alkalinity enhancement could reduce CO₂ removal potential by 2–29% by 2100, highlighting the need to consider biogeochemical feedbacks in evaluating ocean alkalinity strategies.

The majority (92.7–98.3%) of weathering products remain in the soil profile, termed the retarded fraction. Some products precipitate as carbonate minerals or adsorb to soil surfaces. While soil-based mass balance methods help quantify weathering rates, actual CDR can only be accurately determined by accounting for the retarded fraction, influencing long-term carbon storage estimates.

In contrast, carbon capture (CC) and synthetic direct air capture (SDACC) raise social costs by $60–80 trillion per year, increasing pollution and energy use. Findings suggest prioritizing WWS over CC/SDACC for sustainable climate solutions.

In your graphic summarizing the carbon removal landscape, I would like to make an addition. We - Blue Skies Minerals - and others are developing ways to store carbon in mining wastes. Presently, we are developing a process to store carbon with tailings in underground mines at the kilotonne/yr scale, as well as a process to store carbon with tailings in surface (open pit) mines at the megatonnes/yr scale. You should inform yourself about this work and make the relevant addition to your graphic.
